Ask An Orthopedist: Can a fractured arm be too swollen for the x-ray to read clearly?

Question: Is it possible that when a person fractures their arm that it can be too swollen for the x-ray to be clearly read?

That is a common misconception.  The bones can be seen by x-ray with or without swelling.
