When is it time for surgery to treat bunions? What is the recovery time and process?

Question:
My daughter has bunions on both feet. The one on her right foot is worse and has been very painful for years. She saw a podiatrist a couple of years back and was told she would need surgery. She has orthotics that she wears as a college athlete, she is on her cleats many hours a day, and will be for her major as well. Her pain is getting unbearable. It is time for surgery? What is the recovery time and process?

Answer:

Dr. Beck and Dr. Priddy are our two foot and ankle subspecialists and would be the best to see for the care of your daughter’s bunions. Bunion surgery is an outpatient procedure. The specific procedures do depend on the type and amount of deformity of the toe. I don’t know the specifics for amount of time on crutches, boot, etc., as they change per case. These are all good questions to ask them at your appointment.
