Ask An Orthopedist: Buckle Fracture

Calendar July 25, 2017

Question: My son broke his forearm (buckle fracture) two weeks ago and he is wondering if he can play sports in a cast? He says that he feels better and can move his hand just fine.

Without seeing his x-rays I can’t say for sure, but generally buckle fractures are stable fractures and are unlikely to get significantly out of alignment. The cast will provide the support necessary to protect the bone so if he is able to play and can pad the cast externally so it doesn’t hurt other players then it is probably OK.
