Bucket Handle Meniscus Tear

Calendar April 25, 2017

Question: I have a bucket-handle tear of the medial meniscus with flipped fragment extending into the intercondylar notch encompassing greater than 50% of the overall meniscal volume. My knee has almost full range of motion and I only experience pain/discomfort when I try to squat/bend-knee very deeply(almost to the floor). Can stem cell therapy, like the type performed at the Centeno-Schultz clinic, repair this type of condition? If surgery is required, what is the likelihood that this could be successfully repaired with sutures?

Stem cell therapy will do absolutely nothing for the knee – please don’t waste your money on that. The blood supply for the meniscus is only along the inner edge – if the tear is in the vascular zone then it can be repaired with suture; if it isn’t then the torn portion just needs to be removed. Sometimes the MRI can tell you that but often the decision is made at the time of surgery when the tear is visualized with the scope.
