Consulting an Orthopedist: Torn Biceps Tendon

Calendar March 28, 2017

Question: My husband tore his biceps tendon at the elbow (complete tear). He is very active, but does not want to do the surgery to repair the tear. What are the pros and cons of not doing the surgery? Can he still build his biceps muscle with the tendon not attached?

The pros are not having surgery, not having down time, and not having structured therapy. The cons are that he will have chronic weakness in the involved arm that he cannot ever fully fix without surgery. I typically encourage active people to have the surgery.
