Ask An Orthopedist: Can wrist braces cause more damage than help?

Calendar July 18, 2017

Question: Around 3 months ago, I started getting pain in my right wrist (I hold the mouse in my right hand). I started wearing a Mueller wrist support brace while at work 2 months ago and have been using it every day since then. It gives me a lot of relief when typing and doing desk work. Can I wear the brace for long durations or should I stop wearing it? ( I read some braces may cause more damage than help).

Braces are meant to support pain management, therefore, you may use the brace as much as it is necessary.  I’m not so sure about braces causing more harm than good, but you should look into doing some simple wrist exercises to straighten the muscles that have been weakened.
