Ask An Orthopedist: Ruptured Achilles Tendon

Calendar February 21, 2017

Question: I recently ruptured my Achilles tendon. I enjoy an active lifestyle of running, hiking, golf, coaching youth sports and would like to not disrupt that. In your opinion, which repair option, surgery or immobilization, would be the best for me?

I may be a little old school here but I think repair gives a higher chance of success and return to sports than immobilization. I generally use that for somewhat more elderly and less active patients. I realize there are numerous reports out that state that immobilization is satisfactory and certainly is acceptable, but I personally like the thought of having some strong sutures in there assisting the healing and adding support to the repair.
