Question: I had an MRI done recently after a car accident, and it showed a complete mid substance rupture of my ACL. I am an athlete and since my ACL has been torn, I have not been able to play the game to my full potential. Is this surgery necessary for my knee’s recovery?
Once the ACL is torn it stays torn – it will not heal. It is likely that for you to continue to play sports that you will need the ligament reconstructed. Low demand activities – walking, jogging, swimming, weight-lifting – can be done without an ACL, but higher demand activities involving jumping, pivoting, quick changes in direction need the ACL to maintain knee stability.
