Genicular Nerve Block & Pain Management

Azalea Orthopedics specializes in effective pain management for a number of conditions, including osteoarthritis. However, non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatments can be deemed ineffective for chronic osteoarthritis pain of the knee. Instead, our orthopedics team may utilize a genicular nerve block to provide a therapeutic alternative and manage your pain effectively.

What is a Genicular Nerve Block?

What is a Genicular Nerve Block

The genicular nerves are the articular nerve branches that surround the knee joint, including the femoral, common peroneal, saphenous, tibial, and obturator nerves. A genicular nerve block is when radiofrequency (RF) neurotomy is applied to the articular nerve branches. This type of nerve block is especially effective in patients who suffer with chronic osteoarthritis of the knee.

Under fluoroscopic guidance, the genicular nerves can be easily approached percutaneously. A small amount of local anaesthetic (1-2ml of lidocaine or bupivacaine) is injected around the superior lateral, superior medial, and the inferior medial branches. A positive response to a genicular nerve block is considered if there is at least a 50% reduction in pain in the 24 hours following the injection.
