How Long is the Healing Time from Elbow Surgery?

Calendar June 14, 2019

Question: My 10-year-old son is having surgery tomorrow on his dislocated elbow. He needs 2 pins to support it. How long after the surgery until his cast can come off? How long until he can swim, play drums and baseball?

Dr. Foreman: I suspect that your son has a fracture and not a dislocation of his elbow.  The cast will be on 6-8 weeks and the pins will need to be removed.  Once these things have happened he will be able to start working on regaining his motion and strength. I suspect it will be 2 ½ — 3 months until he is fairly close to back to normal again.
