Ask An Orthopedist:Trapezius Pain

Calendar January 17, 2017

Question:  Is it possible to get trapezius pain with having a labrum tear on my shoulder? If it is a tear and I needed surgery, would the trapezius pain disappear?

Yes, it is possible. If your shoulder mechanics are altered from substitution of muscles in trying to not aggravate the labral tear, then the trapezius may get overused and sore. By repairing the labrum, then the shoulder mechanics will hopefully improve and the trapezius pain will go away. Having said this, if you were my patient I could not give you a 100% guarantee that the trapezius pain will disappear following the surgery. There are many reasons why your trapezius can be sore, many of which have nothing to do with the labrum, and some of which have nothing to do with the shoulder.
